Congratulations to the 26 Downingtown Middle School students for earning top honors in this year's national STEM competition, "Future City", during Presidents Day weekend, in Washington, DC.
Starting in August, the team took on planning and development roles according to the Future City program's annual design challenge. Students developed concepts for their city, (named "Salacia"), by imagining solutions for futuristic problems relating to technology, engineering, natural resources & sustainability. Team members assumed various roles & responsibilities in the process and coordinated their efforts to successfully meet the requirements of the competition through the development of a detailed essay, an elaborate city model, and a lively presentation.
Led by their course teacher, Dr. Lisa Pershall, engineer/program mentor, Mr. Tom Chmielenski, and advisor, Mr. Derek Mastrangelo, the team advanced to the National Competition, along with Lionville Middle School, after achieving 2nd place in the Philadelphia Regional Competition.
